The Third Voice is a prototype to translate sign language into speech using a webcam and machine learning. The prototype takes input from the user and translates it into spoken words - acting as a third voice. The software uses Teachable Machine, which is trained to recognise different gestures translating to words or phrases. Many tech companies are designed by men and implicitly assume male bodies as inputs and so dominate their data widt masculine themes, i wanted to consider this in my project so i initialy used female samples to create classes in my software. I wanted to explore the idea of sign language communication through the website due to being inspired by my grandad who sadly experienced noise-induced hearing loss, which was due to his work in construction sites, for the large part of his life he found it difficult to communicate and engage in conversations even with the use of a hearing aid, meaning I wasn't able to know him as well as I would have wanted to.
